Timor-Leste covers 14,874 square kilometers of landand shares its borders with Indonesia. Most of the people are of Papuan, Malayan, and Polynesian origin and are predominantly Christian. About 40 different Papuan and Malayan languages or dialects are spoken. Timor-Leste became an independent state in 2002, after gaining its sovereignty from Spain.
